Last week, a number of volunteers came together to continue building Badge Wiki), a new knowledge repository for the Open Badges community. The focus of these monthly sessions is sometimes to do live, synchronous wiki editing, while on other occasions we focus on strategy and meta-level issues. During this third Badge Wiki barn raising session we focused on the latter.

Want to catch up with the session? Check out the links below!

Last time we defined specific actions that we should focus on, many of which have already been completed.

This time around, we discussed:

  • The Salesforce patent and ways Badge Wiki can be used in that kind of situation.
  • Significant updates to the wiki since we last met
  • What we can learn from successful wikis that server a particular community (e.g. Minecraft)
  • Architectures of participation (see this post)
  • When we should officially ‘launch’ the wiki to the wider community and general public

There were a number of actions from the discussion, including:

  • Add the multilingual MediaWiki extension
  • Look at extensions that might be able to help with navigation
  • Create templates that help people structure particular types of pages
  • Investigate creating a ‘thunderclap’ to draw attention towards the launch

Thanks again to Participate for making this possible and for the Open Recognition Alliance for hosting us.

We’re looking forward to the next barn raising session in October, hosted by Bryan Mathers. Please do join the Badge Wiki discussion group to find out more!

We Are Open Co-op works to spread the culture, processes, and benefits of openness wherever we can.
