All around people were buzzing. Standing there, looking at the Build and Teach the Web floor at the Mozilla Festival, one might wonder “What kind of learning is this!?”

New employees from Adobe sat with knowledge workers from Sephora, Pixar and other San Francisco based companies. They were laughing as they showed off a day’s work — websites built using a text editor, Photoshop and this thing called the Hero Machine. Another workshop, but not the kind of learning we might remember from school.

Jump across the bay to the Graduate School of Journalism — journalists are building multimedia social justice and investigative journalism projects. Using animation, interactive design and web-based engagement in the early 2000s, these journalists were on the edge of technology. Even in a university, participatory workshops became the gold standard for learning about media and technology.
